Atlas Arcana
v 1.0
Atlas Arcana is a terrain-based 2D procedural map generator built in Godot. Each map is unique, with polygonal regions rich with mountains, forests, prairies, swamps, jungles, and deserts.
::: HOW TO USE :::
- Adjust the Basic and/or Advanced Generation values and hit the [Generate Map] button.
- Use the Display Controls to alter how the map is displayed.
- Click the Screenshot to download a PNG image of your map.
- Click the Export Map button to download a text file containing data about your map (including polygon shapes, region information, and a 3d heightmap).
::: ROADMAP :::
Recently Completed:
- v 0.4:
- Screenshot functionality
- Export functionality, outputting the map details (including polygon shapes) into a usable format.
- Screenshot functionality
- v 1.0:
- Added Advanced Generation controls, including seeded randomness, noise types, noise octaves, noise gain, and noise lacunarity. These settings are also included in the Export file.
- Added Camera controls including orthagonal and diagonal camera movement, zoom, rotation, and re-center.
- Maps of all sizes now automatically zoom and center upon creation.
- Updated the font to Free Sans by the GNU Free Fonts project, ensuring robust unicode support (e.g. for the various arrow icons I use for the camera control buttons).
- Applied the GNU General Public License 3.0 to the Atlas Arcana project as a whole, officially making it open source.
Up Next:
- As the project is now at v1.0, there are no official plans for further development.
- However, if you run into a bug or have ideas for new features, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm committed to supporting the software and may continue to tinker with and enhance it over time.
- If you'd like to dig into the Godot source code and contribute, I've made the GitHub repository public: https://github.com/Rob-Bartel/atlas-arcana.
- What's next for Arcane Games? Well, now that I have a basic handle on working with Godot, I'm ready to shift over to game development.
- Originally I'd been planning to build a Grand Strategy game on top of my Atlas Arcana maps... but then the American president threatened to absorb my nation into his current clownshow of a republic. Let's just say that I have a low tolerance for bullies and an even lower tolerance for fascism. So it's time for a change of plans...
- I'm going lean into my strengths as both a historian and a narrative designer to make a tactical Adventure RPG about three young witches taking on the nazis in WW2. It's going to get dark and I'm not going to pull any punches as a storyteller. But I promise you that good will win out in the end. It always does.
- I'll be building it in the open here on itch, with plans to transfer over to Steam as the pieces come together (and if anyone knows some Canadian-made platforms, let me know). I'll add a link here once I have something to show.
